A representative of the Ramsey County Recorder's office described a new, free property fraud alert service available to Ramsey County residents during the March 4 board meeting.
The presenter said Ramsey County joined the North Dakota Recorders Information Network and is offering a Property Fraud Alert portal (propertyfraudalert.com/ndramsey). Residents can register using names, nicknames or initials and choose to receive notifications by text, email or phone when documents bearing their names are recorded with participating recorder offices.
The recorder's office said the system, developed in partnership with a vendor, will not yet accept searches by legal description because legal-description conventions vary. Staff said they will publicize the service on the county Facebook page, the county website and distribute flyers, and plan to notify local lenders so people who visit banks can sign up.
The recorder's office recounted an instance where a large loan taken out using a local property owner’s name was caught before it closed, and said that early adopters who registered elsewhere had already received alerts that prevented fraud.
No board action was required; commissioners acknowledged the presentation and encouraged staff to proceed with outreach.
