Polk County commissioners on March 4 approved three expedited land-use items: a small-scale comprehensive plan amendment in Poinciana to allow a storage facility, and separate 20-year extensions of the development order and conditional use for the South Fort Meade Mine.
Staff described item O2 as a small-scale comprehensive-plan amendment (case LDCPAS-2024-28, Space Source Inc.) to change approximately 7.49 acres within the Poinciana DRI from Development of Regional Impact to Neighborhood Activity Center to allow construction of a storage facility; staff had recommended changing the entire parcel to ensure compatible land use. The planning commission had unanimously recommended approval. No members of the public spoke in opposition; the board voted to adopt the amendment by voice vote.
Items O3 and O4 addressed the South Fort Meade Mine and asked the board to adopt a 20-year extension to the existing development order and the associated conditional use. Staff said both items are separate actions but part of the same extension request; both were adoption hearings and staff recommended approval. No public comment was offered at the hearing; commissioners approved both items by voice vote.
