County agrees to pay share for BNSF crossing replacement on CSAH 1

The Meeker County Board on March 4 approved a crossings surface installation agreement with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway to replace a deteriorating railroad crossing on County State Aid Highway 1.
Phil Smalls (county highway representative) told the board the crossing has maintenance problems and that BNSF’s standard agreement is for the railroad and the county to split replacement costs. He said the county’s estimated share of the replacement is about $32,000. BNSF will lift the rails, install precast concrete crossing supports, replace the rails and the county will patch pavement next to the crossing after the railroad’s work is complete.
The board moved and approved the agreement in a voice vote. Phil estimated the railroad’s crews should complete the crossing work in a single day.
End note: the county will cover its estimated share and coordinate pavement patching after BNSF completes its portion of the work.
