Civil Service Board approves continuances for two police appeal hearings

The City of Miami Civil Service Board on Feb. 14, 2025, granted continuances for two pending appeal hearings involving police personnel.

The continuance for Sergeant Daniel Crocker, who is appealing a 10-hour suspension effective July 19, 2024, was requested by his attorney, Griska Menon. Menon told the board she had medical issues and asked to continue the hearing: "I had some medical issues, and I'm requesting a continuance. I should be cleared to return back to work next week." Lynette Geary, assistant city attorney, said she had no objection. The motion to continue was seconded by Ulysses Garcia and carried on a voice vote of "aye." The meeting record does not identify the member who made the initial motion.

The board also granted a continuance for a separate appeal involving a police sergeant identified in the record as Aileen; the appeal concerns an unsatisfactory performance rating. The motion to continue that hearing passed by voice vote after the city attorney indicated no objection.

The board adopted the meeting agenda and approved the minutes by voice vote at the start of the session. Board members and attorneys discussed scheduling constraints for hearings; staff noted there were already two hearings on the calendar, and one board member said it may not be possible to schedule the continued hearing in the next month. Attorneys asked the board to set the continued hearings as soon as practicable.

The board did not set new hearing dates during the meeting; staff said they would notify the parties when the items can be placed on the agenda.
