The West Fargo City Commission voted March 3 to direct staff to begin the process of updating the Renaissance Zone development plan and to request a 10‑year extension of the city’s Renaissance Zone designation, which is scheduled to expire June 6, 2025.
Casey Sanders Bergland, director of economic development, told the commission the extension process will not immediately change incentives or maps; rather, it will allow the city to submit an updated development plan, produce an updated inventory, solicit letters of support from Cass County and the West Fargo School District, and hold the required public meeting as part of the extension application.
Why it matters: The Renaissance Zone is a state‑level designation used by cities to support redevelopment and provide tax incentives to eligible properties; an extension would preserve the city’s ability to use the program and create an opportunity to update program guidelines under new state changes.
Ms. Birkland moved to direct staff to proceed with updating the Renaissance Zone plan and request an extension; Commissioner Zundell seconded the motion. The commission voted "aye" and the motion carried.
Next steps: Staff will prepare the updated development plan, seek required support letters from the county and school district, schedule the public meeting, and return to the commission with materials required for the formal extension request.
