District administrators presented a proposed middle-school mathematics resource for grades 6-8 and said the district will present the item for board approval at the next meeting.
An administrator told trustees the recommended purchase is a three-year package priced at $53,000. "For yes, I do. It's, dollars 53,000 for a 3 year purchase," a district presenter said during the informational discussion. The middle-school math team and a committee of teachers reviewed three or four programs and recommended the product to increase continuity across grade levels and to replace older materials.
Administrators said the district's contract for the sixth-grade materials is ending and that seventh- and eighth-grade materials date from 2015, prompting the committee to seek updated resources. A presenter described the program as research-based with online components and ancillary materials intended to support instruction while allowing teachers flexibility. "They were tested over a period of years... the materials show growth in students and growth in learning," a committee representative said during discussion.
Trustees asked whether the district could write its own curriculum; administrators responded that the purchase is a teacher resource to deliver standards and that writing and validating a district-specific curriculum would be more time-consuming and costly.
Ending: The board is expected to vote on the middle-school math resource at the next meeting; administrators said committees for other grade bands are simultaneously reviewing elementary and other materials.
