Woonsocket City Council unanimously approves resolution honoring Shamrock Thune's state title

The Woonsocket City Council unanimously approved Resolution 25 R 28 recognizing Shamrock Thune, a student at Woonsocket High School, for winning the boys weight throw at the 2025 Rhode Island Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field State Championship and for having the longest weight-throw mark in the country this season.

Councilwoman Fox introduced the resolution and asked for its approval. "We are so, so proud of him for his accomplishment and his hard work and dedication," Fox said during remarks supporting the resolution. She described Thune's near-personal record mark — "79 feet 9 and, I think, 3 fourths of an inch" — and said his personal record goal is 80 feet.

The council first voted to take Resolution 25 R 28 out of order to consider it earlier in the meeting; that motion was made by Councilman Kenoyer and seconded by Councilwoman Fox and was approved. Councilwoman Fox then moved to approve the resolution; Councilwoman Gonzales seconded. The council president called for the vote; councilors responded "Aye," and the clerk recorded the measure as approved unanimously.

Fox credited Thune's coaches, teammates and family, and noted he will represent Rhode Island at the New England regional meet. Council members including Gonzales, Kenoyer, Hammond, Dubois and Sierra asked to have their names added to the resolution—each later confirmed their support as the council adopted the item.

The council did not attach conditions or amendments to the resolution. The measure is a formal expression of recognition and does not impose financial obligations on the city.

The council moved on after the unanimous approval; no further action on this item was recorded.
