McFarland board adopts nondiscrimination policies, renews lacrosse co-ops and approves virtual-school transfers

The McFarland School District Board of Education on March 3 unanimously approved two nondiscrimination policies, renewed WIAA cooperative agreements for girls’ and boys’ lacrosse and approved recommended student transfers from virtual schools back to students’ resident districts.
The board voted 4-0 to adopt the second reading of policy 2264 and policy 2266, described at the meeting as nondiscrimination policies covering pre- and post–Aug. 1, 2024 incidents. "What you would be doing if you vote to approve these is you're basically rescinding the policies for after 2024 that we, that you just adopted and saying, we're just going back to how it was before," Mr. Tarnett, the district administrator, said during discussion of the Title IX-related policies.
Separately the board approved the WIAA cooperative team renewal for girls’ lacrosse and then for boys’ lacrosse; each motion carried by voice vote, recorded as unanimous 4-0. Board members discussed that many cooperative-team athletes come from neighboring Oregon and noted co-op agreements provide opportunities for students in schools that do not run stand-alone programs.
The board also approved an administrative recommendation under Wisconsin statute for transfers of students enrolled in virtual schools — identified at the meeting as WIVA (also referenced as WEVA), Destinations Career Academy and Insight School of Wisconsin — back to their resident districts because of a documented lack of engagement. The motion was made and seconded and carried unanimously 4-0. Administrators noted the transfers apply to students who were accepted by the virtual programs but subsequently failed to participate consistently.
