The Wagoner Economic Development Authority (WEDA) on March 3 heard a request from the Wagner Lions Club for a $10,000 sponsorship to support the seventh annual Lakeview’s & Barbecue event. The Lions’ presentation included attendance and economic-impact figures that organizers said showed benefit to the city and region.
Monica Medley, president of the Wagner Lions Club, told the authority the event brings KCBS cooking teams and sizable public attendance to the lake and that the organization had previously coordinated with the city on promotion and logistics. Medley said the group raised significant funds on its own in recent years and that the event generated increased traffic and sales for the area.
The WEDA board said its current budgeted event-sponsorship line totaled $4,675 through July 1 and that the $10,000 figure had not been budgeted. Board members discussed options for moving funds but concluded they were not prepared to reallocate other line items at this meeting. The board recommended organizers submit a written funding request and agreed to consider the item at a special-called meeting so it could review documentation and a narrow ordinance finding tying the sponsorship to economic development objectives.
No sponsorship was approved at the March 3 WEDA meeting. Board members asked organizers to provide documentation, and one board member advised any award be made by resolution with a stated public-purpose finding.
