Library board vacancies, George Moses Horton Book Festival and other administrative items discussed

County staff presented several administrative and community items, including library board appointment materials, an upcoming book festival and a resolution authorizing a private sale of surplus county property.
Lily Purnell, branch manager of the Northampton Memorial Library, told the board there are three vacancies on the local library board and that four applications had been received from Vivian Branch, Pam Brett, Michael Wayne Smith and Diana Osborne. Commissioners said they would review the applications and make appointments at a future meeting.
Purnell and library staff also promoted the second annual George Moses Horton Book Festival to be held at the Northampton County Culture and Wellness Center in April; the festival program will feature seven guest authors and events for children and adults.
County staff read a draft resolution authorizing the private sale of a surplus sign located at the former Odom Correctional Institution. The resolution cites N.C. General Statutes permitting a private sale and states no sale may be executed until at least 10 days after publication of notice; staff said the board would act on the resolution at the next meeting.
Other brief administrative items included a public comment from a volunteer fire department representative expressing continued interest in pursuing a fire-tax district and tax-administrator items noted for later action.
The board took no immediate appointments or final action on the surplus-property resolution during the session; they said appointments would be made at a subsequent meeting.
