Staff reports kickoff of Southbridge survey, Denton Revealed events and ongoing tax-exemption work

Staff reported a kickoff meeting for the Southbridge Neighborhood Historic Resource Survey, previewed Denton Revealed preservation-month events in May, and said work continues on a proposed historic-tax-exemption program.
City staff told the Historic Landmark Commission on March 3 that consultants have begun work on the Southbridge Neighborhood Historic Resource Survey and that community engagement is planned for April.
Staff said SWCA Consultants will lead the survey and that preliminary planning covered community engagement and education to explain the purpose of the survey. Staff said community outreach is scheduled toward April to build neighborhood participation.
Staff also previewed Den Revealed, the city’s preservation-month program (Denton Revealed), noting it will be the fourth annual series of events during National Preservation Month in May. Staff said the city proclamation for Denton Revealed will be presented to city council on April 9 and that five events are planned this year, including a May 3 event in the Denia neighborhood that will feature a ribbon cutting for two newly designated properties and a walking tour; additional event details will be shared when finalized.
On a tax-exemption item staff has discussed previously, staff said internal analysis and discussions are ongoing and that the item will be brought back to the commission when staff completes the necessary financial and procedural review. Staff said they are running numbers and continuing internal coordination and did not provide a final timeline other than that the matter remains under active staff work.
Staff asked commissioners to attend proclamation and launch events where possible.
