Town names veterans plaza for long-time volunteer Doug Brown

The Flower Mound Town Council unanimously approved a motion on March 3 to name the veterans plaza at Peters Colony Memorial Park for Chief Warrant Officer Douglas A. Brown, a World War II veteran and long-time town volunteer.

Chuck Jennings, Parks and Recreation director, told the council the 3.3-acre park adjacent to the Flower Mound Public Library will feature a veterans memorial, flagpoles and interpretive signage. Jennings read a summary of Brown's service and volunteer record, noting his military service and decades of local volunteer work, including refurbishing more than 1,300 computers for veterans and low-income residents and serving as an election judge, veterans liaison and on senior-service boards.

"Chief Warrant Officer Douglas A. Brown" (the council discussed including the rank in the official name) was present at the meeting; a proclamation read by Mayor Cheryl Moore recognized Brown's service and several awards he has received, including a 2019 Texas Governor's Volunteer Award and a congressional veterans recognition. A member of the public who introduced Brown said he was 99 at the time and remained active in refurbishing computers.

The council then voted to approve the naming. The agenda language and staff packet included the parks board's recommendation and a proposed rendering of the veterans plaza features. Council members gathered for a ceremonial photograph with Brown and his family following the vote.

The motion passed by unanimous roll call. Staff said the park's construction is underway at the intersection of Peters Colony Road and Old Settlers with an anticipated opening in late fall or early winter 2025, weather permitting.
