Commission approves small walkout porch and door replacement at 711 Fourteenth Street

On March 3 the Galveston Landmark Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for alterations at 711 Fourteenth Street that include replacing a nonhistoric front door, converting a nonhistoric window opening to a side-yard walkout door, and adding a small one-story walkout porch and stair.
Staff described the proposed changes as follow-up work to a previously approved demolition of nonhistoric additions. The proposed porch is low to the ground and the applicant said a fence would further reduce visibility from the public way. Staff concluded the proposed front door and modest porch are compatible with design standards for historic properties and recommended approval with the staff report’s specific and standard conditions.
The applicant told the commission the request was a simple solution to allow access to the side and rear yards after demolition of the nonhistoric additions: "We wanted to add this simple little stoop... it sort of mirrors the existing in its simplicity and scale." No public opposition was recorded. A motion to approve staff’s recommendation passed unanimously among those present.
The commission’s approval covers design review only; building permits and construction inspections remain separate processes.
