The Galveston Landmark Commission voted March 3 to approve a modification to a previously authorized rooftop addition at 1202 Post Office, converting an enclosed rooftop addition into an open rooftop porch with recessed steel safety railings.
Staff summarized the application as a revision to a prior approval (noting earlier approvals in 2022 and an April 2023 amendment) and recommended the modification because the change "reduces the visual impact while preserving the overall design rhythm." Staff noted the proposed steel railings would be recessed about eight inches from the facade and located on the west face, which staff said is not visible from a right-of-way.
The project architect and owner described retaining the openings’ size, proportions and materials while removing windows and adding a recessed steel protection rail where interior sill heights required fall protection. "Because the sill on those 3 openings is only about 18 inches from the floor on the inside, we have to have some kind of protection to keep people from falling out," the architect said, explaining the proposed inside-mounted steel railing would match existing nearby steelwork.
No members of the public spoke against the modification. A motion to approve staff’s recommendation passed on a unanimous vote of those present.
