Park board approves MB Johnson trailhead proposed by Fargo-Moorhead Trail Builders

The Moorhead Park Advisory Board on Aug. 28 approved construction of a trailhead at MB Johnson Park proposed by the Fargo‑Moorhead Trail Builders, a volunteer 501(c)(3) that maintains single-track trails in the Fargo‑Moorhead area.
Sean, a parks staff member, told the board the FM Trail Builders maintain approximately 16 miles of single-track trails and already work at MB Johnson, Gooseberry and Horn Park. Under the proposal Moorhead Parks and Recreation would provide materials while volunteer labor and some donors would cover equipment and installation costs.
Sean said the proposed trailhead would be visible from the roadway, near parking, and would create a more explicit entrance to a dirt-track trail that is currently less obvious. He noted the proposed location would impact a small native prairie planting area, and staff plan to coordinate with partners on planting and signage decisions.
A board member asked whether the trailhead signage could align visually with new park signage; staff said the design team is discussing branded elements so trailhead signs flow with the park signage program.
Mitch Havig moved to approve the trailhead addition at MB Johnson Park; Brian Haugen seconded. The chair called for aye and the motion carried.
Staff said the city will supply material costs and the Trail Builders will provide coordinated volunteer labor and donor support; staff will return with details on signage and a construction timeline.
