Eagle Scout installs 8-by-8 paver chessboard at Davie Memorial Park

Ronan John, an Eagle Scout candidate, told the Moorhead Park Advisory Board on Aug. 28 that he completed an eight-by-eight chessboard of pavers and oversized chess pieces at Davie Memorial Park and described fundraising and installation details.
John said the multi-day build included donated pavers and landscaping materials from local contractors and hands-on work from fellow scouts. He told the board he raised funds from local organizations and that JT Lawn Services and a company identified as MVM donated equipment or materials.
John described the construction sequence at the meeting: excavating the site, installing geotextile fabric, placing crushed rock bases, laying pavers, trimming edging and sweeping locking sand into joints. He said a plaque recognizing donors and volunteers will be installed and that any leftover funds will be donated to the city or, if the city cannot accept them, a charity per Boy Scouts of America rules.
Board members praised the project. Park Advisory Board member Emily Moore said, "This is an amazing amenity for the city of Moorhead," and praised John’s leadership, fundraising and flexibility. Board member Brian Haugen added that community engagement and the mix of donors were valuable.
Paul, a parks staff member who introduced John to the board, thanked him on the city’s behalf and presented a certificate recognizing the scout’s community service.
The board did not take a formal vote on the presentation; the item was a recognition and informational update.
