Local volunteer organizer pitches 'Love Newman' projects and youth programming

During the public-comment portion of the Sept. 23 Newman City Council meeting, Michael Campos of 435 Cinnamon Lane described ongoing volunteer and youth activities he's organized under the Campos Busy Bee Youth Foundation and a community effort called Love Newman.
Campos said Love Newman is "basically a sub nonprofit of Love Our Cities," and described regular volunteer events that have drawn between about 100 and 200 participants. He said planned activities include repainting parking-lot striping at local businesses, arts activities and pottery for seniors, mowing lawns for elderly residents, family barbecues, movie nights and a 3-on-3 basketball fundraising tournament. Campos said he uses Sherman Park for many activities and noted insurance coverage will be provided through Love Newman or his church for various events.
Campos asked to partner with city departments including public works, police and fire to support volunteer projects and youth programming. City officials on the dais thanked him for the work and said the city would help where it can; no formal council action or funding request was recorded from the presenter during the meeting.
The city has a public Facebook group (Newman Youth Activities) Campos said he uses to share events and registration information; he encouraged parents to add the group for updates on soccer, basketball and other youth programming.
