The South Berwick Town Council, acting as the board of assessors, unanimously approved four tax-abatement adjustments at its Sept. 23 meeting. Town assessor staff characterized the requests as data corrections from recent informal hearings rather than new valuation disputes.
Assessor Bernadette (staff member) told the council the abatements resulted from informal hearings that concluded after the valuation “commitment” deadline and therefore were not captured in the earlier KRT processing. She described each correction as a data or condition change rather than a dispute over valuation methodology.
Approved abatements and amounts: - Abatement A2026-4 — $71,400 reduction. Correction: barn removed from property and basement type corrected. - Abatement A2026-8 — $56,600 reduction. Correction: condition downgraded from average to below average. - Abatement A2026-10 — $1,145,500 reduction. Correction: adjustment to building grade (quality/architectural/workmanship/materials). - Abatement A2026-11 — $62,000 reduction. Correction: change in condition from good to average.
Votes and procedure: Each abatement motion was moved and seconded during the assessors portion of the meeting and passed 4–0. Councilors present recorded “aye” votes in voice roll call. The council chair noted that the abatements reduce assessed property value, which in turn changes the tax-dollar calculations captured in supporting documents.
Context: Bernadette explained the abatements are above the threshold for assessor approval and therefore required board action. The abatements reflect corrections identified during informal hearings that concluded near the end of the statutorily prescribed commitment timeline; KRT’s extended hearing schedule meant some changes arrived after commitment processing.
