The Pittsylvania County Commissioner of the Revenue, Ms. Gore, asked the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 16 to authorize a refund of $20,749.50 to a local business after a filing error.
According to Ms. Gore, Circle K filed its business personal property reporting form by Feb. 15 as required. The business later notified the commissioner's office that a computer glitch had appended extra zeros to equipment identification numbers, causing many items to be reported twice and producing an overpayment. The commissioner said her office prepared a letter and that a deputy had inadvertently reversed numbers in an earlier draft, so the corrected refund amount is $20,749.50.
The nut graf: state code requires the county treasurer be authorized to issue refunds in these circumstances; the commissioner requested the board’s permission to allow the treasurer to refund the corrected amount and staff said the item is already scheduled for the board’s business meeting agenda.
Board members asked for confirmation of the correct figure and were told the county will amend the agenda material to show $20,749.50. No formal vote on the refund was taken during the work session; staff confirmed the refund request will appear on the Sept. business meeting agenda for a formal vote.
Ending: The board will consider the refund request at its next business meeting; staff indicated the documentation will be corrected before that meeting.
