UDOT and UTA outline FrontRunner 2x double-tracking plan for north-of-Provo segment

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah Transit Authority (UTA) staff briefed the Provo City Council on Sept. 9 about the FrontRunner 2x project, which would add strategic double-track segments across the 83-mile corridor to allow service every 15 minutes in peak periods. Officials said the state has appropriated roughly $850 million toward FrontRunner expansion, including a $200 million appropriation in 2023 and a dedicated commuter rail fund.
UDOT project director Brian Allen and members of the project team described why adding more trains is not simply a matter of more cars or frequency on single-track sections. “Most of FrontRunner is a single track...sharing that single track limits how often trains can arrive at stations,” Allen said.
