Flat Rock honors Fire Chief William Vack after 46 years of service

Fire Chief William Vack was honored by the Flat Rock City Council and regional officials during a council meeting, where representatives presented resolutions and commendations recognizing his 46 years of service to Flat Rock and the Downriver region.

Council members, county and state representatives and residents gathered for a series of presentations marking Vack’s retirement. Al Wilson, Wayne County commissioner, read a county resolution that “offer[ed] congratulations and best wishes to City Of Flat Rock fire chief William Vack on his retirement after 46 years of distinguished service with the department.” Jeremy, representing state offices, said the governor and lieutenant governor “sent me here to personally thank you because they couldn't be here.”

The recognition included a congressional commendation that will be entered into the congressional record and a Wayne County Commission resolution read aloud by Wilson. Colleagues and current and former council members spoke about Vack’s long record of duty, his time as civil defense director and his roles in the building department. Vack accepted a token of appreciation from city staff and thanked the many people he worked with, saying, “one who solves problems you didn't know exists in ways you do not understand. Council members and other speakers recalled responses to major incidents, mutual aid runs and community events where Vack served, and invited the public to a send-off that included a final ladder truck ride. The mayor moved for a short recess so attendees could greet Vack and offer personal thanks.

The tributes reflected both formal recognition (county resolution, congressional commendation) and personal remarks from colleagues and residents. No policy decisions or budgetary actions were made as part of the ceremony.
