Ramsey County youth auto‑theft intervention wins NACO award; county remembers Metro Transit sergeant killed in boating accident

At the June 24 meeting, Ramsey County officials announced the Youth Auto Theft Intervention Project will receive a 2025 National Association of Counties (NACO) Achievement Award.
County presenters said the focused deterrence program, launched after sharp increases in youth‑involved auto theft and carjacking in 2021–22, produced major reductions: carjackings fell 78% and auto thefts decreased 55% since the project began. County staff described the effort as a collaborative partnership across the county attorney’s office, sheriff’s office and the African American Leadership Council.
In the same report, officials announced the death of Sergeant Beverly Rodriguez of the Metro Transit Police Department. Staff said she died in a boating accident on White Bear Lake and that she had led the department’s Homeless Action Team since joining Metro Transit Police in 2017. The county extended condolences and said it had sent an organizational note to Metro Transit Police Chief Daseth.
