The Wabasha County Board of Commissioners approved a 10-month property tax abatement on a home in Elgin Township that was declared a total loss after a December fire.
The abatement was requested by the auditor’s office and approved at the board’s meeting after a motion by Commissioner Springer and a second from Commissioner Powers. The board voted to approve the abatement; all commissioners present voted in favor.
The auditor’s office told the board the homeowners were displaced and are rebuilding. Staff calculated the abatement for 10 months of taxes because the owners anticipate moving into the new home in September or October. County staff will perform a site check in October to monitor progress and will return Jan. 2 to place the new value on the property, the auditor’s office said. If construction is not complete within the stated timeframe, the homeowners must apply for an extension.
The property is located in Elgin Township at 280 Seventh Avenue, according to the auditor’s presentation to the board.
