Commissioners approve new Mount Pleasant precinct for board review; Mark Apartments relocation debated and tabled

Madison County Election Commissioners on Aug. 13 approved sending a proposal to create a new precinct at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church to the Board of Supervisors and debated a separate plan to move District 3 voters from Mark Apartments to Mount Charity Baptist Church before tabling the latter motion.

Commissioner Joanne Pearson moved to present a request to the Board of Supervisors to establish a new precinct in District 2 at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church (proposed precinct number 202). Pearson said the change is intended to reduce pressure on Saint Joseph Catholic Church, which currently serves a large precinct. She told commissioners the new precinct would shift "about 1,300 plus" voters away from Saint Joseph, which she said currently serves roughly 4,000 voters.

Pearson also moved to move District 3 voters from Mark Apartments to Mount Charity Baptist Church (proposed precinct number 303). That motion prompted extended discussion. Commissioners and attendees raised procedural and fairness questions about splitting a precinct so that some voters are moved while others remain at the same site. Several commissioners noted that Mark Apartments had not provided written notice to election officials and that a precinct split must be presented to — and actable by — the Board of Supervisors.

After discussion, the commission voted to table the Mark Apartments motion and to return the item to the commission later so staff can confirm contract status and stakeholder notification. A commissioner suggested additional outreach to the supervisors and affected precinct officials before any transfer of voters is finalized.
