Board members discussed several policy updates and legislative changes during the Aug. 11 meeting, and the policy committee recommended a two-meeting process before formal board approval. The committee presented three categories: citation-only updates, policies with legal changes and a new library-materials policy (policy 606.5) that follows a Minnesota School Boards Association model.
The citation-only updates correct statutory references or footnotes and do not change policy substance, the committee said. Policies identified as having legal changes (listed in the meeting as "4 '14, 4 '18, and 5 2001") were presented for committee review; the committee also ran a standard three-year review cycle for other policies.
Because several recent legislative bills affect school policy language, the policy committee recommended spreading approvals across two board meetings to allow time for additions or amendments. The board was told legislative-update materials and model policy language from MSBA informed the committee's work. The new policy 606.5 (library materials) was introduced as a modeled policy with no local deviations.
The chair said the August meeting would be a work session for policies and formal votes on the policies will occur in September.
