Bay County school board adopts three revised sick-leave policies after 30-day public hearing

The Bay County School Board voted unanimously July 8 to adopt three revised sick-leave policies covering different personnel chapters after a public hearing and a 30-day advertisement period.
The policies — numbered 1430.03, 3430.03 and 4430.03 — clarify how employees earn and use sick leave across full-time, part-time and other covered categories. Board staff told members the updates consolidate consistent language across personnel chapters and correct a drafting issue that could have led to unintended leave payouts.
"These were the few that we had asked that you kind of hold back on them," said district staff during the public hearing, explaining the policies were not included in the July 1 policy manual adoption because a final tweak was needed. Staff said the tweak prevented a provision that lacked a cap and could have allowed excessive leave payoffs.
Board Member Moore moved to adopt all three revised policies together; the motion was seconded by Chester. The roll call vote recorded all board members voting yes.
No members of the public raised objections during the public hearing portion of the meeting. Board members described the public hearing as brief and thanked staff for the work aligning the policies.
The policies will be added to the district policy manual where the three separate chapters are slotted, staff said.
