Commission directs staff to schedule annual chair presentations from advisory boards

Sarasota commissioners on July 21 directed the city auditor and clerk’s office to prepare an annual schedule so that each city advisory board’s chair (or a designated member, or staff liaison if needed) will be invited to give a short annual summary to the commission.
Commissioner Ahern Koch proposed the change after noting that the existing practice of receiving written board reports on consent limits direct commissioner‑board dialogue. Commissioners asked staff to limit individual presentations to a few minutes and not to convert the practice into a time‑consuming forum; staff said written annual reports will still be required for budget and record purposes and that the schedule will be optional for boards that prefer not to attend in person.
The commission also directed staff to prepare the schedule in coordination with board chairs and to treat the presentations as voluntary; if a chair cannot attend, a designee or the staff liaison will present. The motion passed unanimously.
Ending: Staff will prepare a calendar of annual board presentation dates and notify board chairs; the chair presentations will supplement (not replace) written annual reports.
