The Ormond Beach City Commission approved a contract renewal with the Volusia County School Board to fund a school resource officer in local schools (Resolution No. 2025-98). The motion passed 4–1.
During debate Commissioner Travis Sargent said he would vote no, arguing the school board should bear the cost. "I am a no on this. I think the school board receives tax money from our residents and I think that it should be, in their budget to fund this," Sargent said. Deputy Mayor (Zone 2 Commissioner) Travis Sargent reiterated funding concerns but other commissioners said they were not willing to start the school year without an officer in place. "I'm not willing to start the school year next month without a school resource officer," the deputy mayor said, urging continuation for the coming year while the school board is asked to address funding for the future.
Commissioners Briley, Deaton, Tolland and Mayor Leslie voted yes; Sargent voted no. No amendment or cost‑sharing changes were recorded at the meeting.
Ending: The contract will be executed as approved; commissioners said they will pursue discussions with the school board about long‑term funding.
