Mayor Jon Mitchell submitted the appointment of Antoine Murphy of New Bedford as a constable to the City Council; the Committee on Appointments and Briefings reviewed the application and interviewed Murphy on July 22, 2025.
Murphy, who said he lives at 217 Maple Street, told the committee he works for the New Bedford Housing Authority in a security and fraud role and that he sought the constable appointment to replace a retiring constable who had performed those duties.
Committee members discussed application paperwork and confirmed a corrected application had been received. Councilor Sean Oliver and others advised Murphy that the constable role involves court and service processes and suggested exercising humility when serving papers; Oliver said courts provide resources and warned that serving individuals can be difficult.
Councilor Derek Baptiste, who said he has known Murphy for more than 25 years, praised his community work and recommended him for the role. The committee voted to refer Murphy's appointment to the full City Council with a favorable recommendation; the committee report will go forward to the Aug. 21 City Council meeting for final action.
No final appointment was made at the committee meeting; the referral means the full City Council will consider the nomination at its next meeting.
