City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry staff on July 21 reported several operational and capital updates to the board, including restored federal funding for Community Learning Center (CLC) sites, strong recent revenue, and upcoming projects.
Mark Schramm, on behalf of the administration team, said the fall activity guide will be mailed August 14, with resident registration opening August 18 and nonresident registration on August 21. Schramm reported June registrations generated over $262,000 and point-of-sale (POS) revenue—primarily pools and sports complexes—added nearly $163,000 from roughly 43,000 transactions, for total department revenue in June of about $425,000.
Mark Thompson said federal funding for the department’s two CLC sites was unfrozen and the city received the resubmitted funds, totaling about $180,000, which will fully fund the two CLC sites for the year. Thompson said staff had considered a return to a pay-to-play model if funding were not restored and described the funding restoration as "a huge win" for families.
Thompson also reported that recently installed TurboChefs in concessions have already met their 2025 revenue goals and that the department is partnering with SC Wave for additional turf-field rentals. Melissa Lipska (Growlands Billings/GBR) reported staffing and building maintenance items: the rotary building will get new doors, windows and vinyl plank flooring and will be closed for about a month during the work; the formal gardens project will begin in August and will include porous pathways, irrigation and revised stormwater management.
Staff also noted ongoing hiring efforts for maintenance and supervisory positions and that operating and CIP budgets are in progress ahead of finance committee meetings in late August and October.
