Council proclaims July as Parks and Recreation Month, praises YPSI staff and programs

The Sacramento City Council presented a resolution recognizing July as Parks and Recreation Month and honored the city—s Youth, Parks and Community Engagement department (YPSI) for its programs and staff.
Councilmember Vang and Councilmember Kaplan co-sponsored the resolution and called up department leadership to accept the recognition. Vang noted the department's role in providing recreational opportunities for families who may not travel outside the city and highlighted parks as community "gems." Kaplan thanked YPSI staff and said the department's 2024 recognition as a top training provider by the American Red Cross reflected the city's investment in lifesaving aquatic training.
Jackie (identified in the meeting as the parks director) described the department's scope: serving hundreds of thousands of residents across "over 230 parks and parkways, trails, and open spaces," operating 15 community centers and 17 pools, and employing more than 1,600 staff. "We serve hundreds of thousands of residents of all ages and abilities and backgrounds every day through our parks and recreation system," Jackie said.
Councilmembers applauded the department for tree-planting, youth programming, summer camps and maintenance work. Council presented a resolution to YPSI leadership and thanked staff for their service to neighborhoods across the city.
The recognition is ceremonial and does not commit new funding, but councilmembers used the moment to highlight ongoing investments and upcoming programs run by YPSI.
