Applicant Thomas Hughes told the board he is seeking a 6-foot fence around his property, with a 4-foot gate by the garage, to provide a secure area for his miniature schnauzer and to make his 91-year-old mother-in-law feel secure outside on the back porch. "I've got a 91 year old mother-in-law living with me, and she does not feel secure to even go out and sit on my back porch," Hughes said.
Board members asked whether the new fence would follow the same footprint as the existing fence; Hughes confirmed it would. After brief discussion, the board voted in favor of the variance. Roll-call responses recorded were unanimous in favor. Staff said the applicant will receive a written approval and will need to obtain a permit through the planning office before installation.
The board’s action applies only to the zoning setback requirement; the applicant must still secure required permits and follow standard inspection and installation procedures.
