MetroNet's citywide fiber-optic project in Battle Creek has entered an initial survey phase in which contractor Vertical Dynamic is documenting utility pole conditions across the community, Mayor Mark Behnke said.

Crews are taking detailed photos and measurements to determine whether additional communications lines can be safely installed on existing utility poles. Most work will occur in public rights-of-way, but some poles are located behind buildings or in backyards; in those cases, crews will knock on doors to request access and will continue work if no one is available. Residents are advised they may ask for proper identification from crews before granting access.

The mayor said the survey is for documentation only and will not involve construction or affect utility services. MetroNet is building a 100% fiber-optic network across Battle Creek using a mix of underground construction and existing poles; construction will be completed in multiple phases and city updates will be posted on battlecreekmi.gov as work progresses. The mayor pointed residents to MetroNet's website for project-specific questions.
