The Rockville Town Council voted to enter into a three‑year fiber optic service agreement with Southcentral Communications to bring a fiber connection and internet service to the town office.
Todd Benson of Southcentral Communications presented the proposal and said the company would absorb construction costs and provide standard business pricing, recommending a 20 Mbps plan for the town. "We won't pass any of the construction cost on to the town," Benson said, and confirmed there would be no installation charge for the standard service discussed.
Councilmembers asked whether the provider would install a public hotspot at the park and how the office network would be configured. Benson said UDOT is funding the park hotspot equipment and that the company would provide the router and could create separate networks for office and guest access. "We actually bring fiber all the way to the equipment... and then that is a wifi router," he said, and recommended securing the guest network.
Councilmembers pressed for a hardwired connection to the town building as the preferred configuration for meetings and administrative needs. Benson said a hardwired run is recommended but that the company would need to inspect conduits and site conditions to estimate cost and feasibility. He said the standard installation timeframe after contract approval is about 60–90 days.
After the presentation and brief discussion, a motion to enter the agreement was made and seconded. The council approved the agreement by roll call vote: Michael — yes; Robin — yes; Megan — yes; Pam — yes; Jeff — yes. The council directed staff to coordinate with the provider on the contract details, to confirm the hardwired option and network separation for office Wi‑Fi, and to obtain the signed contract and pricing documentation for council review.
No dollar amounts for the monthly service rate or the contract were stated in the meeting record; the presenter said pricing had been provided to staff outside the meeting. The provider agreed to resend the contract and pricing to staff for review.
