Port of Arlington says EPA grant will fund environmental cleanup; contract award pending

The Port of Arlington told the county court it has an EPA grant to address contamination at a former school property, received three RFP submittals and expects to award a contract; community outreach will precede remediation.
Jen Crowther of the Port of Arlington briefed the Gilliam County Court during public comment on July 16, saying the port has an EPA grant to perform environmental cleanup at a former school property and is moving toward a contract award.
“We have an EPA grant to do that. We have RFPs. The deadline has passed, and we received three submittals that are under review, and we expect to be awarding a contract for that work,” Crowther said. She said the work will involve community outreach “before they proceed with remediation of the environmental hazards.”
Crowther said the port and the county have coordinated funding so that county redevelopment funds are reserved for redevelopment while the EPA award will pay for the cleanup portion. She described a likely timeline that could see cleanup begin late this fall or possibly into next spring, and said decisions remain about whether the building will be demolished or repurposed; “there’ll be some decision points along there of whether you can how much you can salvage and reuse,” she said.

Crowther said the port will notify the county when community outreach meetings are scheduled. The court did not take action on the update during the meeting.
