Committee votes to send proposed name change, “Safe Streets Advisory Committee,” to City Council on Aug. 4

Members of the Keizer Traffic Safety, Bikeways & Pedestrian Committee debated a proposed simpler name for their advisory group and voted on July 17 to forward the suggestion to the City Council for consideration at the Aug. 4 meeting.

Why it matters: Committee members said a shorter name—suggested as the Safe Streets Advisory Committee—would better communicate the group’s broad focus on safety for all street users. One member raised concerns that the phrase “safe streets” could be interpreted as a public‑safety or law‑enforcement body and urged additional research before a final change.

Committee member Matt moved to send a possible name change to the City Council agenda for its Aug. 4 meeting; Brenda seconded. The committee recorded a 3‑1 vote in favor of the referral. A committee member identified as Hope voted no.

Discussion at the meeting covered the committee’s history and the tradeoffs of keeping the long, descriptive title versus using a shorter, more memorable name. Several members said the group should research whether other jurisdictions use “safe streets” in a way that might cause confusion with public‑safety entities. One committee member also suggested the committee could compile several proposed names and return with options for council consideration.

Next steps: The committee agreed to bring the proposed referral to the City Council packet for its Aug. 4 meeting. Committee members offered to coordinate to prepare materials and, where appropriate, attend the council meeting to explain the rationale.
