Redevelopment Agency approves $25,000 exterior grant for Viking Mike's at 1500 South Main

The City of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency on July 16 approved a $25,000 Commercial Visual Improvement Program (CVIP) grant to assist exterior improvements at Viking Mike's Alpine Yurt Bar, a proposed 21-and-over bar at 1500 South Main Street.
Dina Babzski, director of economic and urban development, described the property as inside the Gateway District and eligible for the full $25,000 award because the owner is making significant private investment. Babzski said the owner is investing "almost a million dollars" in renovations and that project materials listed exterior costs as $8,188,000.
Applicant Jared Howard described Viking Mike's as a kitschy, Scandinavian-themed bar with a 1,600-square-foot wooden yurt to be erected behind the building. Howard said the venue will operate chiefly in the afternoons and evenings with a small food program centered on house-made sausages and other items.
"It's very kitschy, very tongue in cheek escapism at its fullest," Howard said.
Howard said the operation will be limited to adults 21 and older; the business will test earlier weekend hours but is expected to focus on happy hour and evening service. The staff presentation at the meeting listed the owner investment figures and an expected third- or fourth-quarter completion date this year.
Councilwoman Diaz moved to approve the CVIP resolution; the motion passed. Staff tied the RDA action to a related council item on the regular council agenda.
The CVIP grant will be drawn from the RDA special revenue fund for redevelopment area 1, Ward 3, as noted by staff.
