Napa County staff and partner scientists are conducting intensive biological and physical surveys at the Yountville Ecological Preserve along the Napa River to better understand relationships among groundwater levels, surface flows and ecosystem health, fluvial geomorphologist Christian Broderick said during a county field briefing.
"What we're hoping to do is develop a relationship between groundwater levels, surface water flow, and ecosystem health," Broderick said. "What are the conditions that are supporting ecosystem in different parts of the valley? How does the ecosystem change as you go to different parts of the valley? How might things like groundwater management affect the availability of surface flow?"
County officials said the monitoring is part of the interconnected surface water and groundwater-dependent ecosystems work plan for the Napa Valley Subbasin. Findings from the studies will be used to develop guidance to address ecosystem needs across the valley.
