Charleston City Council voted unanimously on July 15 to rename the Charleston Tennis Center on Farmfield Avenue the Peggy Bone Tennis Center to honor Peggy Bone's roughly 50 years of service to the city's recreation program.
Council members, former colleagues and community members praised Bone for her decades of work running the tennis center, keeping facilities maintained and organizing tournaments and youth programming. Council member Keith Waring described her as "someone who grew up in the program" and said he was honored to support the action. Broadcaster Bill Sharp and others were acknowledged for advancing the idea to name the facility after Bone.
Peggy Bone, who was in the chamber for the vote, told council she had a "wonderful happy career with the city" and said one of her favorite parts of the job was seeing children rewarded: "I hope that we will continue to do things for children, and I'd love I want the Charleston Tennis Center to continue to be a haven for the children of our community."
Council members noted that Bone has influenced multiple generations of players, coaches and volunteers and praised staff who worked with her over the years. The motion to rename the facility passed by voice vote; the council applauded and invited Bone to the microphone after the vote.
