City adds $905,249 to East Riverfront Phase 1 to restore catenary lighting; funding from DGRI approved

The community development committee approved an $905,249 increase to the East Riverfront Phase 1 contract so the project can include catenary lighting that had been removed when bids initially exceeded budgets.
Staff said bids for the trail and riverfront amenities came in significantly above estimates and the project team evaluated scope reductions to bring the work within budget. The removal of catenary lighting was one such reduction; staff and DGRI later identified funding to re‑add the lighting. The work is adjacent to the new amphitheater and staff said completing lighting foundations now is critical to meet the amphitheater timeline.
“Bids when they came in were significantly over estimate. So, in order to bring it within budget, we evaluated options to decrease costs. One of those included the removal of the catenary lighting. This item before you seeks to re add that to the project,” a staff presenter said during the committee discussion.
Commissioners noted the project’s importance for riverfront activation and emergency access behind the amphitheater. Staff said the increase will not change the project’s critical path and that DGRI had approved funding to cover the lighting addition. The committee approved the increase by voice vote.
