Council hears multiple public-works updates: paving, culvert replacements and Cedar Drive planning

City engineering staff briefed the Oak Grove City Council on several public-works projects and near-term traffic impacts at the July 14 meeting.
Chuck, the city engineer, told the council Viking Boulevards north half will be paved later in the week with an early start (6 a.m.) planned for the two-day operation; crews have been contacting affected residents and will allow access via the shoulder where possible. The Nightingale culvert was scheduled for replacement later that week using state aid funds; staff said the repair would include a detour and should take less than five days.
Staff also reported the county plans a culvert replacement on Lake George Boulevard beginning Aug. 11 (expected to last fewer than five days). The county will provide 10 days notice to the fire chief so emergency response arrangements can be coordinated with St. Francis.
Looking ahead, the city engineer said several state-aid roads are coming due for rehabilitation and staff plan to propose Cedar Drive as the next state-aid street project. Cedar Drive will be a substantial and technically challenging job because it will need widening and extensive drainage work; staff said early soil borings and a sooner start on geotechnical work are recommended because culverts are partially submerged and the water table is high in places.
Council members raised safety questions about construction traffic speeds near work zones and asked staff to speak with inspectors about additional enforcement; staff agreed to follow up.
Votes were not required for the status updates; staff said additional pay applications and contract items related to the 2025 street project will appear on future agendas.
