Hiawatha board approves consent agenda, personnel hires and retirements; accepts Capturing Kids’ Hearts grant

The Hiawatha School Board approved its consent agenda and a slate of personnel and policy actions at the meeting.

The board accepted a Capturing Kids’ Hearts program grant as presented. It also approved the district fee schedule, with board members acknowledging the district will use nonfederal funds to avoid raising student meal prices, and approved policy handbooks and KASB policy updates.

Personnel actions approved by the board included multiple hires, resignations and retirements. Motions and recorded outcomes on the personnel items were as follows:

- Brynn Williams — hired as HMS assistant volleyball coach. Motion passed, 6–0.

- Keith Erdley — hired as HHS girls golf coach. Motion passed, 6–0.

- Nicole Jewett — hired as HHS assistant softball coach. Motion passed, 6–0.

- Acceptance of the resignation of Sherry Nelson as HMS girls basketball coach. Motion passed (vote recorded as aye; tally not otherwise specified).

- Acceptance, with regret, of the retirement of Teresa Williams as HMS fifth-grade teacher, effective at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Motion passed.

- Acceptance, with regret, of the retirement of Lonnie Mosier, effective June 30, 2026. Motion passed.

Board members also moved to authorize submission of a required form to the county for a program the district is pursuing; the motion passed.

Earlier in the meeting the board voted to approve an agenda amendment to include an executive-session negotiation item and then approved the consent agenda, and later approved the fee sheet and policy changes after discussion of statutory notification requirements for not raising meal prices.
