The Sampson County Board of Commissioners voted to reappoint James D. Johnson as the county's tax assessor and tax collector for the four-year term beginning when his current term expires in July 2025. Johnson was sworn in at the meeting and pledged to faithfully discharge his duties.
Johnson delivered the county's preliminary tax settlement for the just-closed fiscal year. He reported total collections for real and personal property of $1,337,113.82 as of July. The office wrote off 536 small bills of $2 or less totaling $528.72. Compared with the previous year, the settlement was $109,131.93 lower, while the county's real and personal property levy for county dollars rose by $636,411. Johnson said the tax office finished the year with a collection percentage of 97.54%, up from 97.1% the prior year.
The board moved to accept the annual tax settlement and to "charge the tax collector with collecting the uncollected property taxes," as required by statute language read at the meeting. Commissioners approved the motion by voice vote.
During the swearing-in, Johnson recited an oath to support the constitutions and laws of the United States and North Carolina and to faithfully discharge the duties of his offices as tax assessor and tax collector. He thanked the board and noted he has served in the tax office for 19.5 years and as tax administrator for 14 years.
