Local organizers seek space for elementary STEM program; county officials propose temporary sites

At Tuesday’s Humboldt County meeting, community volunteers asked county officials for help finding space to run a STEM program for elementary-age children.
The presenter identified herself as Emily Lane and said she and a co-organizer wanted to serve roughly 25 to 30 children in activities including robotics, coding, engineering builds and science exploration. Lane said the organizers hope the program will run year-round, not only during the summer, and could eventually tie into school LEGO robotics and high school robotics teams. She said the group can bring its own materials and does not need storage onsite.
County members asked about schedule and capacity. Lane said the program would initially meet about one hour a week, preferably in the evenings during summer and immediately after school during the school year. She said advertising would begin through social media and local parents’ networks and that organizers planned a July start if a site could be secured.
Several county representatives offered temporary options. One board member suggested an office space with limited restroom access and the food pantry side of a building (with a key-only entrance) for evening sessions; another offered the new shelter at Sheldon Park, which has restroom facilities, and said he would discuss details with a staff member named Todd. A county representative said they would check availability and get back to the organizers; the transcript records the board asking Lane to provide a phone number privately for follow-up.
Jeremy Johnson, representing RWE (identified in the meeting as RWE), said the organization will host a library partnership event the next morning and invited the organizers to attend. Johnson also volunteered to help with a hands-on experiment session as part of the library’s summer reading program.
No formal county action or funding decision was taken. Board members directed staff to follow up with Lane about available facilities and scheduling.
