Humboldt County approves plans for transportation safety grant project, schedules June 30 bid letting; Virginia Avenue closed for bridge work

Humboldt County commissioners approved plans and specifications on Tuesday for a transportation safety grant project that will add paved shoulders, thicker edge-line striping and rumble strips on two curves south of Rutland and at Avery’s Hill, and set a bid letting for June 30 at 8:45 a.m.

County staff said the work will include milling approximately 6 inches deep and 3 feet wide adjacent to the travel lane, removing material, hauling rock as needed and placing multiple lifts of new pavement. The meeting record shows staff will manage material handling and coordinate storage or disposal of milled material.

A motion to approve the plans and specifications was made and seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion carried. The board separately moved to set a public bid letting on June 30, with the meeting record showing the date and time of 8:45 a.m. for receipt of bids.

During the same meeting, staff reported that Virginia Avenue had been closed between addresses described as 240 Fifth and 200/250th Street — roughly a mile east of Thor — for a bridge replacement project. Contractors planned to move equipment immediately, and staff said the individual bridge jobs were expected to take about two weeks each, weather permitting.

Staff also described next steps and scheduling. One staff presenter said the project has a planned fall start (October) for placement activities; the board discussed seeking the earliest possible contractor start and agreed to the June 30 letting to keep the schedule on track.
