County administrator outlines strategic-planning outreach, housing and tourism concerns; airport grooving and veterans tribute testing underway

The Sawyer County administrator told the Administrative Committee the office will launch a refreshed strategic-planning process that seeks broader input from towns, schools, hospitals and businesses while keeping the work focused on a small set of achievable goals.
The administrator said outreach options include targeted questionnaires, small-group sessions and public workshops. He said prior efforts relied on categories and small-group feedback and that the county should aim to condense results into two or three high-priority items for the first year while maintaining a longer-term list for future work. “Keep it narrow, focused, and get something done,” he advised, summarizing a prior successful approach with UW Extension facilitation.
On economic development, the administrator and committee discussed persistent housing-affordability challenges in the county's tourism and hospitality sectors. He cited a median or average family income range discussed in recent regional presentations and noted the county repeatedly hears concerns about wages and worker housing that affect local employers.
The administrator also provided operational updates: the airport runway project is complete and will receive groove-cutting and repainting beginning Saturday; the work is scheduled for night hours to reduce disruption. He said he is working with SEH, an engineering firm from Eau Claire, to complete environmental testing for the Veterans Tribute project and that he plans to tie future funding to service contracts with clearer terms so the county has recourse if contract conditions are unmet.
Regarding emergency communications infrastructure, the administrator reported discussions with Gencom about an expansion project; he said he was told the prior tribal governing board had approved the tower project and he did not expect the new governing board to rescind that approval, but he also said he would seek written confirmation.
Committee members asked for more structure and a proposed timeline for strategic-planning outreach; the administrator said he would return next month with a structure and aimed to begin outreach in September.
No formal committee vote occurred on the strategic-planning approach at the meeting.
