Caroline County elections director reports on hiring, judge recruitment and candidate filings

The election director for the Caroline County Board of Elections told the board that the office’s election program specialist position was posted and closed July 1 and that the county human resources office has up to three weeks to grade applications.
The director said a statewide hiring freeze does not apply to local boards of elections and that staff have attended multiple virtual Mayo committee meetings in preparation for the 2026 elections. On recruitment of election judges, the director said 69 judges responded to an interest survey; 68 indicated they are willing to return and one declined. The director said staff member Tammy sent follow-up requests to judges who had not yet replied to identify gaps.
On candidate filings, the director reported that as of July 2 five candidates had filed for local contests in Caroline County. The director said a full list is available on the State Board of Elections website, which breaks filings down by state and local offices. The director told the board the filing deadline is in February; she did not specify an exact date.
Board members noted the presence of retiring employee Debbie Brohan, who the director said was attending her last meeting. The board scheduled its next meeting for Aug. 8.
