Human Relations Commission praises allyship training, approves "Voices of Sunnyvale" event

The Sunnyvale Human Relations Commission reviewed an assessment of a June 13 allyship training and voted to hold a second signature community event called "Voices of Sunnyvale" to celebrate local diversity and replicate last year’s immigrant storytelling circles.

Commissioner Camacho presented results from the June training, saying the session drew both in-person and Zoom participants and produced extensive discussion. ‘‘We had over 40 people present in via Zoom and in person,’’ Camacho said, and the commission was shown slides summarizing attendance and survey results.

The commission’s assessment reported that roughly 60 residents registered for the session, about 40 attended, and the post-training survey yielded 14 responses. Organizers reported that 71% of respondents rated the event "excellent," 21% "good," and about 7% "fair." The assessment noted that roughly three-quarters of attendees identified as individual community members and about a quarter represented organizations. Presenters emphasized that the three-hour session was a condensed format compared with a two-day intensive offered previously.

Commissioners and community members described learning outcomes such as improved familiarity with the concept of allyship, understanding of privilege and implicit bias, and an interest in continuing conversations through community dialogues. Camacho said the session produced a greater willingness among attendees to support equity and inclusion initiatives and suggested the training be seen as an introductory step that would benefit from follow-up work.

Commissioner Rosenfeld moved that the commission hold a second signature event, restating the motion as: "have our second signature event be called Voices of Sunnyvale, and it'd be an event celebrating the diversity of Sunnyvale, and it will include various stations or subparts similar, including, but not limited to what we did last year." Commissioner Valencia Landa seconded. The motion passed 4–0–2 (two members absent). Rosenfeld noted the event would include small-group storytelling, art activities, and options for attendees to contribute writing or drawings for later display.

Several commissioners proposed additional outreach and marketing steps — including inserts in the water bill and collaboration with Sunnyvale Community Services — to broaden participation. Commissioners also discussed making an archival booklet or online collection of stories and artwork collected at the event.

The commission said staff will return with event logistics and a draft work-plan item for formal review.
