City of Xenia council on July 10 authorized the purchase of a new John Deere LTC 600 leaf loader at a cost of $77,985.29 through the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing program and the vendor Best Equipment Company Inc.
City Manager Brent Merriman said the unit replaces a 1997 leaf loader that had already been refurbished once and has exceeded its practical service life. Staff recommended offering the existing unit for sale at auction under the city code (section 214.06(b)), saying there was no trade‑in value.
Merriman told council the purchase fits the amount budgeted for equipment this year (about $80,000), that the unit comes with a standard manufacturer’s warranty and that delivery should be possible by November if purchased promptly. He estimated, with proper maintenance, the new unit could last 15–20 years.
Councilman Reynolds moved the authorization, Councilman Walker seconded, and the council approved the purchase by roll call.
Why it matters: staff said timely replacement is needed to maintain leaf‑collection schedules and that the budget already included funding for the purchase, avoiding an unplanned expenditure.
