Staff reported on meetings of a strategy group convened as part of the South Broadway Revitalization Framework. The group of residents and business owners identified priorities for public art along the corridor: a distinct identity for the corridor, clearer wayfinding, integration of history, and art that serves double functions such as benches, bus stops, planters or interactive installations.
Functional art examples mentioned included pollinator-friendly crosswalks, planters that provide both traffic-calming and green space, interpretive installations that educate users about local history or ecology, and climbing-play sculptures that double as public play elements. Staff said these resident ideas will be shared with the branding group and used to prioritize projects.
Staff noted timelines for the revitalization project: construction on South Broadway is not expected to finish until fall 2026; staff will use the intervening time to develop an art strategy, hold public input sessions and prepare materials for a City Council presentation scheduled for Sept. 8.
Commissioners were invited to attend upcoming strategy meetings (staff said the next meeting will be July 15) and to help synthesize resident input for corridor themes and priorities.
